Description: Photograph showing people and airplanes gathered at Moraine Airpark in Dayton, Ohio, for the area's first aviation event of 1976. The image was submitted by photographer Michael G. Williams of West Carrollton, Ohio, in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. Williams provided the following caption for the image: "Here Ohioans are observing one of the first aviation events of 1976. The Experimental Fly-in at the Moraine Airpark, in the Dayton area. The picture shows a red, white, and blue experimental craft at center and a barnstorming Boeing Stearman at right. Also in the photo a Orange Waco biplane and a yellow Piper Cub. All of which has been a part of our aviation growth." In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: Dated ca. 1930-1943, this photograph shows a large machine with the word "Bliss" on the front. It appears to be a stamping press, which is used in the manufacture of everything from cars to home appliances. This could be the Frigidaire factory in Moraine, Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Reverse reads: "Zanes Cave's - Bellefontaine, O. Logan Co." This photograph shows limestone stalactites. Now called Zane Shawnee Caverns, the cave system is located in Jefferson Township, just east of Bellefontaine, Ohio. The caverns are a show cave, or commercial cave, presently owned by the United Remnant Band of the Shawnee Nation. These caverns are located near the Ohio Caverns; both cave systems were formed by the same glacial process which deposited moraine upon nearby Campbell Hill. The land adjacent to Zane Shawnee Caverns was used as a thoroughfare for the Shawnee, as it provided a portage between the Great Miami River and the rivers feeding into Lake Erie, particularly the Maumee River. However, the caverns were not known to modernity until they were discovered in 1892, when John Dunlap rescued a boy and a dog from a sinkhole. The caverns were named the Zane Caverns, after the nearby village of Zanesfield. The caverns were operated as a show cave throughout most of the 20th century. In 1996, the Shawnee Nation URB purchased the caverns and surrounding land, and renamed the site as the Zane Shawnee Caverns. The URB continues to operate the caverns as a show cave, and has also founded the Shawnee Woodland Native American Museum on the site. This museum is among the few Native American museums owned and operated by a Native American tribe, and displays exhibits about George Drouillard, a mixed-blood Shawnee guide, chief hunter and interpreter for the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Also on the cavern site is "Southwind Park," a camping and retreat area which hosts URB events. A small permanent settlement has also been erected at the site. View on Ohio Memory.
